The center of oceanography and marine biology “Moskvarium” started working at VDNH: 80 aquariums, 8000 species of sea creatures from all over the world including 500 species of fishes, killer whales, three meter sharks, dolphins and Russian sturgeon.
The construction of oceanarium began in 2013 and was going on for 2 years. The total area of the complex is 53 thousand square meters (including pools for marine mammals). The capacity of water reservoirs is 25 million liters. There are 80 aquariums (a reservoir of three million liters capacity and area of 12 square meters) in the Moskvarium and 1.2 thousand people can attend it at a time.
The aquariums show sea and freshwater fauna from the Lake Baikal to Galapagos islands, from the fjords od Iceland to Great Barrier Reef, from Greenland to Kamchatka. Over eight thousand animals and 500 species of fish from the smallest coral dweller to the three meter sharks and Russian sturgeon live in the aquariums. Among them are freshwater fish, including sturgeon and the inhabitants of the small rivers of Russia (such as stickleback, studding, bitterling); the fauna of the White Sea, including the stock of peled of 400 creatures; rare exotic specimens from all over the world - oviparous tooth carps, bonnethead, cow-nosed ray, seahorses, billfish; live cuttlefish and cold water boxfishes from the southern part of Indian Ocean.
The zone with aquariums includes interactive children’s area, touch pool with sea stars, carps and stingrays. The complex also has a large audience hall, holding 2.3 thousand people, for educational programs and shows with 3D projections, 5D effects and the performance of killer whales, white whales, dolphins and pinnipeds. It is planned to hold at the oceanarium scientific and educational seminars, to show documentaries about sea world, arrange the tours to observe the killer whales and dolphins at arm's length.
Besides there are seven special pools equipped for swimming with dolphins. Each dolphin has the instructor to help the swimmers and observe what is going on in the water.
There was a unique system of water treatment and microclimate created in Moskvarium. To start the oceanarium it was required to use more than 700 tons of sea salt. To maintain the water salinity it is required about 80 tons of salt monthly.
Regularly 47 engineering systems purify the water and air. Every four hours, the water passes the full cleaning cycle. Temperature, chemical composition and other water parameters are controlled automatically.
All animals regularly pass medical examinations. The lab of the oceanarium is equipped with modern devices that allow carrying out ultrasonic, radiographic, gastropically and dental check-ups, as well as cytological and bacteriological tests.
The complex has all the necessary facilities for parents with children and visitors with disabilities.
